Our Selection Procedure of The Best Crib Mattresses

When you search “crib mattress” on Amazon, you will find over 600 results. We researched and interviewed experts, reviewed parent feedback, and reviewed a variety of best of lists before making a list of the best crib mattresses currently available. After additional research on the internet and discussions with manufacturers, we developed a list of mattresses that we tested at home. After analyzing 12 mattresses, the list was narrowed down to 12.

The materials used in each crib mattress and the differences between each brand were factors I used to narrow my choices among crib mattress brands. Our conversations included those with Barry Cik of Naturepedic, Michael Rothbard of Newton Baby, as well as representatives from Colgate, Kolcraft, and Moonlight Slumber.

• Excellent customer service and a solid warranty. An important aspect of a brand’s warranty and customer service is the ability to get in touch in case something goes wrong, such as a mattress that sags after less use or is torn. The number of people that could be reached the company was noted, along with the fact that there was no number listed. Several online reviews mention issues with customer service; we took these into consideration as well.
• Materials outside of certification. A Greenguard Gold certified mattress emits a minimal level of volatile organic compounds. Further to foam mattresses already certified by CertiPUR-US, we also reviewed mattresses free of all forms of formaldehyde, lead, ozone-depleting chemicals, and flame retardants. Further, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) was tested on organic mattresses. The certifications all came from where? The materials used in crib mattresses are discussed.

What’s in A Mattress?

Despite not being specifically part of above criteria, we checked the materials in mattress during testing, in addition to meeting certification standards.

We began by examining the filling in the core. The innersprings of a crib mattress are typically either foam-cored or enclosed in polyester cotton, or other fabrics. Special crib mattresses generally consist of polyethylene, cotton batting, and coconut husk. The mattresses we tested came with information about their contents.

Mattresses made of foam are typically lightweight, weighing between 5 and 13 pounds. Petroleum-based polyurethane is most commonly used in foam mattresses. Many mattresses claim to be formaldehyde-free. Formaldehyde is present (usually as an adhesive) in some polyurethane foam types. Generally, green mattresses contain some soy oil, which replaces the petroleum oil used to make polyurethane foam (typically 20 to 25 percent). In addition to latex and bamboo fiber foam mattresses, you can also find them.

There is a slight weight difference between innerspring mattresses and those without. In order to choose a mattress, you have to take into account the coil count and steel thickness. For mattresses of varying firmness, the coil count and gauge of steel of the coils (i.e., the smaller the number) increase. Babies don’t really need a lot of support when it comes to crib mattresses (the average is around 80 pounds), so 135 to 150 coils should be fine (between 12 and 20 pounds). Innerspring mattresses typically have boundary rods lining the outer edges so that they are firm and do not sag at the edges.

Added to this, spring-to-mattress mattresses may also contain layers of cushioning or padding, either composed of polyurethane foam, cotton fabric, or coco fibers, with an insulation layer composed of either woven polyester or cotton. It will be more difficult for the manufacturers to create better mattresses because there will be more layers and the materials used for the layers and pads will be more durable.

It is fairly common for mattress manufacturers to use organic materials such as latex or coconut fiber in making mattresses that are used for special occasions. To test the effectiveness of the Newton Baby sandwich bag, a commonly used sandwich bag, we used a food safe plastic sandwich bag for the testing. My next step was to examine the mattress’s ticking. Cotton, food plastic, and waterproof vinyl are possible covers for crib mattresses, depending on their type. The thicker the vinyl cover, the more it tends to tear, rip, and dry easier. PVC, a plasticizer containing phthalates, has been found to disrupt an animal’s hormonal balance. Vinyl is softened and flexible because of the phthalates it contains. Many mattresses feature phthalate-free and PVC-free labels, since certain types of phthalates are subject to stringent regulations.

The mattresses were examined for their construction, as well as their materials. Some mattresses have seams around cover, and others are seamless. In addition to the organic cotton, the socks were also brushed with food-grade polyethylene to make them look like natural cotton, and the knitted fabric was water- and odor-resistant.

Why These Certifications Are Relevant?

We opted to examine mattresses that were examined by an independent group since scientists are unable to know what effect VOCs might have on children’s health. We tested foam mattresses that are low VOC and Greenguard Gold , as well as those that CertiPUR-US certified. It’s GOTS- and Greenguard Gold-certified and does not contain polyurethane foam. Researchers analyzed the release and effect of VOCs on infants while they slept from 20 used and 20 new polyurethane foam crib mattresses and beds.

Variety of chemicals have been found to be contaminated in crib mattresses. The chemicals that comprise these categories include (VOCs), and semivolatile organic compounds. Flammables and plasticizers are among the compounds in crib mattresses, as both foam fill as well waterproof covers contain them. More than 30 of these compounds are released into the air.
